SOC Best Practices | Substance Use Disorders: DSM-5 Diagnostic Considerations for Youth

Intentional inclusion of and attention to possible substance use by youth may feel intimidating for many mental health professionals. Making informed decisions about potential diagnoses for youth regarding Substance Use Disorders can feel even more intimidating. But a well-explored and thoughtful diagnosis, or no diagnosis, can aid in more individualized and intentional treatment recommendations. This 3-hour training considers adolescence as a unique and purpose-driven stage of life. This understanding then guides explorations of the 11 criteria included in Substance Use Disorder diagnoses. Participants will be challenged to apply these considerations from their own developmental-diagnostic perspectives and philosophies. Understanding the impact of substance use, both current and potential, for adolescents and young adults (youth) is very complex. An accurate diagnostic understanding can aid in this understanding, which importantly, may include no diagnosis. Our diagnostic guide, the DSM-5, is not a clean fit for understanding or qualifying substance use by youth. This training does not propose a single method to guide this process, but provides material to allow for more informed individual consideration.

Please review the following virtual training policies to ensure a productive and respectful learning environment.  

1.Registration: Each person must be registered individually and use their unique link to join the Zoom training. A reconfirmation email was sent to registered persons which contained your link to this training. Your unique link is used for attendance purposes and verification for CEs. 

2.Connection: Bandwidth issues: inform your agency and make plans to access a working connection. Chromebook or similar devices complicate your connection, and you will not be able to obtain chat information etc. Phoning in with audio (no video) cannot verify attendance, and you will be removed from the training. 

3.Artificial Intelligence: To ensure a safe training experience, there is no AI permitted. Any AI present will be removed. Zoom auto transcripts are available. 

.Engagement: Please review your pre-training email with handouts (if available) before the training. Login on time and be prepared. Actively participate in group discussions and breakout rooms. Behaviors should be the same as in-person training, and limit multi-tasking activities (phone calls, side conversations or meetings, emails, driving in your car, being online in unrelated topics, etc.). Cameras must be on, and participants must be in view. If you do not have a working camera or wi-fi, please problem solve this before the day of training. 

5.Earn CE/Attendance Certificate: You must attend at least 90% of the training (attending breaks does not qualify towards CE eligibility). After the training, you will receive a Qualtrics link to complete an evaluation survey. NOTE: If you’re licensed, the license number you provided will be uploaded to CE Broker, so you can access confirmation. Attendance certificates will continue to be emailed. Please allow 4 weeks for distribution, and check your Spam/Junk folder before reaching out.
