SoC Best Practices | An Introduction to the ASAM Criteria: Providing Care to Youth and Their Families

The ‘ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions (3rd ed.) (ASAM) is a widely used and recognized tool that provides guidance standards for building a multidimensional assessment and assisting decisions about matching appropriate levels and types of care to those with substance and addiction needs.  It aims to de-emphasize the focus on the notion of ‘just for placement’ and emphasizes individualized and clinically-driven decisions regarding treatment.  Centered on six areas of dimensional assessment, the ASAM has paid particular attention to the special needs associated with adolescents and the expectations of co-occurring mental health and substance/addiction needs.  Clinicians that provide any level of ‘addiction services treatment’ in Ohio are typically required to use the ASAM criteria for decisions about admission, continued stay, change in level of care and discharge.  This 3-hour, introductory training is designed for clinical staff that provide or collaborate services to youth with identified substance use/addiction involvement (treatment), or who are at risk of substance use/addiction involvement (prevention).

MRSS | MRSS Crisis Stabilization

This training will present the core Mobile Response Stabilization Service (MRSS) model and components. MRSS is a mobile stabilization intervention for youth, young adults, and their families who are experiencing a behavioral or mental health crisis. The purpose of the program is to serve children in their homes, schools, and communities, reduce the number of visits to hospital emergency rooms, divert children from inpatient hospitalization if a lower level of care is a safe and effective alternative, and decrease the number of unnecessary arrests in school or in the community.

SoC Best Practices | Meeting Kids Where They Are; Home-based Care for the IDD Community

This three-hour presentation will use a combination of real life case examples, didactics, videos, discussion, and worksheets to explore a greater understanding of the range of IDD in the youth we serve through IHBT. Specific approaches to engagement and communication will be explored. The many ways in which stress, trauma, and IDD interact will also be examined through a brief and exciting neurobiology review! Considerations and concerns when working with our IDD population will be discussed, as participants depart with resources for further exploration
